Babies Can Sign can also offer services for Pre-schoolers and Primary School Children (particularly at the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1). We can come into the setting and:
. Sign simple songs e.g. 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'
. Sign stories (The Very Hungry Caterpillar is particularly popular!)
. Sign nursery rhymes e.g. 'Baa Baa Black Sheep'
. Tie signing sessions in with current themes in school e.g. Bears
. Teach basic signs to aid literacy
. Teach the BSL alphabet and enable children to sign their names
. Numbers
This has proved extremely popular so far. The research that has been done highlights numerous benefits even in this age group. A particularly good book has been written by Marilyn Daniels 'Dancing with Words: Signing for Hearing Children's Literacy', which draws on her studies that by adding visual elements to verbal communication helps enhance a preschool child's vocabulary, spelling and reading skills.
Other Benefits include:
* Improved concentration (especially for those children who have difficulty with this).
* Improved use of body language, gestures and facial expression * Improved social skills.
* Increased understanding when reading stories.
* An additional way for the children to express themselves, in addition to speech.
* General all-round improvement in communication skills e.g. the child has to make eye-contact and look at the other person in order to fully understand what s/he is saying.
* Increased confidence in interacting with others and expressing him/herself.
* As the signs are BSL (British Sign Language) the children are beginning to learn another language, which can only benefit them and enable them to be able to communicate with the wider community.
